Innovation, and blockchain technology in particular, is increasingly shaping financial markets worldwide and most regulators are considering how to handle the boom of Bitcoin use and cryptocurrency trading. New Zealand's Financial Markets Authority (FMA) is no exception to that.

In an official statement from October 25 2017, the FMA announced it is introducing certain rules applicable to cryptocurrency services in an attempt to facilitate responsible innovation and protect investors of the risks associated with those currencies.

First of all, New Zealnd's financial regulator defined the term "cryptocurrency services". According to FMA, these are "businesses and individuals offering services such as cryptocurrency exchanges, wallets and broking". The regulator announced it applies the follwoing requirements to providers of cryptocurrency services:

- they maust be entered in the NZ Financial Services Providers Register.
- they must be a member of a dispute resolution scheme.
- they must comply with the Financial Markets Conduct Act.

As the above rules have been introduced recently, currently there isn’t any regulated cryptocurrency exchange in New Zealand. In addition, the FMA advised all businesses that consider an Inicial Coin Offering (ICO) to to get in touch with them early in the development phase.

New Zealnd's financial regulator also warns investors of the risks involved with cryptocurrencies and associated services. First of all, digital currencies are extremely volatile. Second,  most online crypto-exchanges are unregulated and operate exclusively online, with no connection to New Zealand or any particular country. This brings additional risks, such as, investors have no protection and will hardly recover their money, if things go wrong.

In fact, the FMA apples to cryptocurrency services providers requirements which are similar to those referring to forex brokerages operating in New Zealand. That being said, investors may also consider simple leveraged trading in Bitcoin and altcoins with some of the regulated forex brokers like IG Group
