Italian Forex Brokers

Italy is not a preferred destination for forex brokers, partly because other European countries, such as UK and Cyprus, have already established themselves as important financial hubs. Most brokerages operate in Italy on the basis of licenses issued in other EU (or EEA) countries.

The local regulatory body that is responsible for overseeing the financial markets is the Italian National Commission for Companies and the Stock Exchange, known as CONCOB (Commissione Nazionale per le Societa e la Borsa). it regulates the provision of investment services and activities by intermediaries, the reporting obligations of companies listed on regulated markets and exercises overall supervision over the sector, among other things.

As Italy is a part of the EU, MiFID (Markets in Financial Instruments Directive) regulations apply. The Directive outlines the minimum capital requirements and the mandatory segregation of client and company funds, which provide traders with a certain level of protection.

The client protection on a EU level also includes the provision of investor compensation scheme which protects retail customers should a brokerage go bankrupt. Furthermore, branches of non-EU investment companies established in Italy also must join a recognized compensation system, unless they are members of an equivalent foreign compensation system in their home countries.

In addition, one can easily check whether a broker is authorized to provide financial services in Italy, as CONSOB maintains an online register of both Italian investment firms and foreign investment companies with branches in the country.
