The number of tourists visiting the United Kingdom and new bookings for inbound tourists decreased during the Olympics, a survey conducted by trade body UKinbound and Qa Research showed Monday.

In the national survey of tour operator, designed to establish the impact of the Olympic Games on inbound tourism business, around 88 percent of respondents said that their inbound tourism bookings or the number of inbound tourists decreased between July 23 and August 12, compared to the same period last year.

As munch as 66 percent of the surveyed tour operators said their businesses declined significantly during the period, while 22 percent reported modest decline. About 59 percent of those who believed numbers were considerably lower stated they decreased in excess of 10 percent.

At same time, 82 percent of the respondents said that new bookings or visitor numbers for the post-Olympic period from August 13 to September 9 dropped significantly compared to last year.

Ukinbound, a trade association representing British tour operators, pointed out that immediate action should be taken with regard to the inbound tourism industry, which is worth GBP9 billion to the British economy, if targets are to be met.

"If the Government is going to succeed in their ambition of welcoming 40 million visitors by 2020, there must be a genuine determination to attract overseas visitors at a time when the 'Olympic' effect no longer exists," UKinbound Chief Executive Mary Rance said.
