FXCM Freestyle App Challenge: Winners Announced

The FXCM Forex Freestyle App Challenge, which started in October 2012, has now finished and the winners have been announced. Read on to find out who grabbed a piece of the juicy $59,000 prize pool.

The challenge, open to US citizens, aimed at getting C++, .Net and Java developers to design a forex-related application for Android, Windows Mobile, iOS or Mac. In order to qualify, the app had to be connected to forex – trading platforms, mobile trading apps, games, educational apps, etc. were all eligible possibilities, and had to be created using the ForexConnect API.

The competition entries were judged on a set of criteria such as quality of the idea, creativity and originality; implementation and execution; design and visual aesthetic; overall user experience, etc.

The judge panel included Evan Milazzo, EVP of Technology at FXCM; Claudio Flores, Team Lead for Programming Services at FXCM; Matt Harris, Managing Director of Bain Capital Ventures; Howard Lindzon, Co-founder and CEO of StockTwits, Managing Partner of Social Leverage; and Matt Gorin, Managing Partner and Co-founder of Contour Venture Partners.

A total of 15 eligible entries competed for the fame, glory and financial incentive the app challenge offered, and here is who won.

Grand Prize ($25,000): FXone
According to its developers, Fxone is an end-to-end trading platform for manual, semi-automated and fully-automated trading. It uses embedded, high-performance Excel-compatible spreadsheets to allow traders who are not programmers create custom analytics, data visualizations, indicators and fully automated trading strategies (EAs) using nothing but standard spreadsheet logic and custom trading functions with no MT4 dependencies of any kind.

Second Prize ($10,000): ECN2 Trader
ECN2 Trader is a full-cycle trading application thatfeatures trading from charts or the scalper book, automated trading through the PowerScript language, etc. It is designed to help beginners learn trading forex while using a professional platform.

Third Prize ($8,000): SUPERMEGATRADERMAN
SUPERMEGATRADERMAN is an 8-bit game that teaches people about forex trading. It has levels generated from real world trading data, compliments of the ForexConnect API. Think Mario Bros, but with buys and sells instead of coins.

Best Game ($5,000): SUPERMEGATRADERMAN

Best Educational App ($5,000): Gorex
Gorex is an app used for graphical representation of the a marketplace. Bid and ask prices are feeding a tree of quotes and users can create their own forex trees using symbols and settings for elasticity, bloom, and number of traders.

Best Mobile Trading App ($5,000): Daisy
Daisy stands for “Data Acquisition Artificial Intelligence System just for YOU” and is in its nature a personal trading assistant. The app lets you trade, and manage and discover trading signals straight from your phone.

Popular Choice Prize ($1,000): ForexTrading Android App
This is a pretty basic trading app and frankly, I was not impressed but hey – the people have spoken and have bested this one out, so kudos to the developers.

See all the winners here.

Penny for your thoughts

While programmers and developers were busy coding, the general population (e.g. us mortals who don't know how to write code) had the option to play a little side game and submit app ideas. Obviously, this is loads of fun and the top 10 ideas each got their authors a prize of $100. Here they are:

#2: A forex app that teaches basic forex trading strategies and allows users to manage a paper portfolio, and test and backtest strategies

#3: A forex app that allows users access to price quotes, charts, positions, orders, reports and execute new market/limit/stop orders with voice recognition

#4: An adventure game that teaches the player how to trade and how to manage their assets

#5: A forex app with which users can trade with their friends, copy friends' ideas/charts, and push alerts for technical and price levels

#6: A forex app that can trade not only currencies and precious metals but also stocks

#7: A forex app which automatically executes buy/sell orders based on market condition and profit & loss targets

#8: A forex app that is a mashup: forex hedging against financial instruments (stocks, bonds, etc . marked to market) that are denominated in foreign currencies

#9: A multi-level, peer-to-peer role playing game from neophyte to professional trader with a cumulative point system on a mobile platform

#10: A forex app that is a mobile/tablet oriented version of the FXCM’s Daily FX Plus (SSI, Trading Signals, videos, etc.) to use while commuting to/from work.
