Egypt Private Sector Activity At Record Low: Survey

Business conditions in Egypt's private sector worsened substantially in December as output and new orders fell sharply while inflationary pressures built up, survey data from Markit Economics showed on Wednesday.

The HSBC Egypt purchasing managers index plunged to 37.1 in December, which the lowest level in the series history to date, from 49.8 in November. A reading below 50.0 denotes contraction. December witnessed the third successive month of contraction and significant worsening of operating conditions.

Production at Egyptian private sector firms declined in December. New order levels and export orders both fell sharply during December and panelists linked this decline to the current fragile economic and political conditions.

Outstanding business levels remained unchanged, while delivery times lengthened for the first time in six months, though marginally.

Jobless levels continued to rise during December as the rate of job shedding was the highest since January. Average tariffs charged by Egyptian private sector firms rose slightly, partly driven by increased costs.

Input price inflation faced by firms accelerated slightly and recorded its highest level in four months. Main reasons behind the acceleration were higher raw material costs and unfavorable exchange rates.

Purchasing activity declined sharply in December, with one-in-three respondents reporting a fall in the quantity of items purchased. Firms reduced purchasing largely due to lower business.
