Australia Q3 Export Prices Contract 6.4%

The export price index in Australia declined 6.4 percent compared to the previous three months in the third quarter of 2012, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

That was in line with forecasts following the 1.0 percent quarterly increase in the second quarter.

By individual category, export prices for crude materials were down 11.7 percent on quarter, while mineral fuels were down 5.8 percent, vegetable oils were down 4.9 percent, manufactured goods were down 4.4 percent, food and commodities were down 0.3 percent and beverages and tobacco were up 4.7 percent.

The import price index declined 2.4 percent versus forecasts for a 1.2 percent decline following the 2.4 percent increase in the three months prior.

By category, import prices for mineral fuels were down 9.1 percent, while vegetable oils and beverages each dropped 4.6 percent, crude materials were down 3.7 percent, chemicals were down 1.7 percent, manufactured goods were down 1.3 percent and commodities were down 0.3 percent.

On a yearly basis, export prices were down 13.4 percent and import prices were up 1.2 percent.

By category, export prices for crude materials were down 23.0 percent on year, while manufactured goods were down 13.5 percent, mineral fuels were down 12.0 percent, vegetable oils were down 11.4 percent, food was down 5.0 percent, commodities were down 3.8 percent and beverages and tobacco were up 4.9 percent.

Also by category, import prices were down 13.3 percent on year for vegetable oils, while crude materials were down 5.3 percent, beverages and tobacco were down 4.3 percent, commodities were down 1.5 percent, machinery was up 1.0 percent and food was up 1.9 percent.

Also on Thursday, the AiG Performance of Manufacturing Index came in with a score of 45.2 in October, up from 44.1 in September.
